P.L. 109-367: Secure Fence Act of 2006

On 10/26/06, President George W. Bush signed Secure Fence Act of 2006 (P.L. 109-367) into law.

On 9/29/06, the Senate passed H.R. 6061 without amendments by a vote of 80-19.

On 9/14/06, the House passed H.R. 6061 by a vote of 283-138.

On 9/13/06, Representative Peter King (R-NY) introduced H.R. 6061, the Secure Fence Act of 2006. The bill calls for the construction of 700 miles of two-layered reinforced fencing, as well as other barriers and surveillance equipment, along specified regions of the U.S.-Mexico border. It also requires DHS to achieve "operational control," defined as prevention of all unlawful entries, over land and maritime borders; to conduct a study on security along the northern border; and to evaluate the authority and ability of CBP personnel to stop fleeing vehicles that enter the U.S. unlawfully.
