How to get a handicap parking permit in North Carolina (NC)

Persons certified by medical professionals as being unable to walk without assistance or who have restrictions caused by lung disease, defective vision, or cardiac, arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic conditions are eligible for handicap parking placards.

How to obtain a permit

Applicants/guardians must complete an Application for Disability Parking Placard (MR-37A) and have a physician complete the relevant section of the application certifying the applicant’s disability. Applicants are required to furnish their proof of identity for obtaining a placard.

Fee

Both permanent and temporary placards have a $5.00 fee.

Validity/expiration of placards/permits

Permanent placards are valid for 5 years. Temporary placards are valid for 1 to 6 months.

Renewing placards

Permanent placard holders must receive recertification from a physician before a new placard can be issued at expiration. Temporary placards cannot be renewed.

Lost placard/replacement

Lost, stolen, or damaged placards can be replaced for a fee of $5.00. Simply visit the local DMV and request a replacement there.

Where to hang the placard/permit

The placard must be hung from the rearview mirror or placed on the dashboard on the driver’s side if there is no rear view mirror.

Miscellaneous

Each eligible applicant is issued two placards.
